von Trapp Brewing Returns to Beer for History

On Thursday, May 2, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., von Trapp Brewing returns to the American Independence Museum (AIM) to kick off its 2024 season at a special spring Beer for History.

Presented by Donahue, Tucker & Ciandella, Beer for History features music, trivia, and/or colonial tavern games with seating available inside and outside the historic Folsom Tavern (c. 1775). Beer for History events are family-friendly and help raise funds to support AIM. 

“It’s a chance to gather with friends in a festive atmosphere in a tavern that once welcomed George Washington,” noted Program Manager Sarah Jaworski. “Beer for History events also support our preservation and education initiatives, so it’s also a great way to support a local nonprofit with a big mission.”

Beer for History with von Trapp Brewing takes place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2 at the American Independence Museum’s Folsom Tavern, 164 Water St., Exeter, NH. Tickets for Beer for History events are $18 and $16 for members while those under 21 are free.

American Independence Museum To Host “Multiple Perspectives: Patriots & Loyalists For Homeschoolers”

As part of their Educating Children & Youth initiative, sponsored in part by M&T Bank, the American Independence Museum (AIM) will host “Multiple Perspectives: Patriots & Loyalists For Homeschoolers” on Wednesday, April 17.

Offered at 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., the 90-minute session is designed for students, ages 5 to 12. In the session, students will explore varied perspectives on the American struggle for freedom and independence by examining the viewpoints of Patriots, Loyalists, and Neutrals.

All AIM homeschool programs emphasize “exceptional, place-based learning and self-discovery.” “We designed these programs specifically with homeschool families in mind,” said Program Manager Sarah Jaworski, who said families travel for homeschool programming. “We have had people travel here from as far away as two hours for these programs.”

According to Interim Executive Director Robert Levey, PhD, the historic nature of  Folsom Tavern, where the program takes place, lends itself to history education. “You don’t just learn about history at AIM, you can experience it within the very walls of the tavern,” he said. “This is experiential learning at its best.”

“Multiple Perspectives: Patriots & Loyalists For Homeschoolers” takes place at 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17. The registration fee is $10 for children (5 to 12) and $5 for adults (13+).

American Independence Museum Invite Guests to “Spill the Tea”

On Saturday, March 23 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., the American Independence Museum (AIM) will host “Spilling the Tea: Drinks that Fueled a Revolution” in Folsom Tavern (c. 1775).

“We will also serve ‘liberty teas,’ which were made by colonists from locally sourced herbs during boycotts of British tea,” said AIM’s Sarah Jaworski. “Tea played a symbolic role in the struggle for liberty and independence.”

In addition to beverages, “Spilling the Tea: Drinks that Fueled a Revolution” will feature catered food by For the Love of Food & Drink with whom AIM has previously partnered on several occasions. “It’s a chance to have a fun experience with costumed reenactors, wonderful food, and tea in beautifully restored Folsom Tavern,” added Jaworski. “This will be the first of several similarly-themed events this year that highlight coffee, chocolate, and tea in fun and creative ways.”

Tickets range from $17 to $40 with a seating at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.

American Independence Museum to Host Open Play

This winter and fall, the American Independence Museum (AIM) will host Open Play (AIM) at the Foy Family Library at Folsom Tavern (c. 1775). Made possible by a gift from Jeff and Melissa Foy just before the pandemic, the Foy Family Library features a coloring station, 18th-century play kitchen, dress-up clothes, and a reading nook.

“We are very grateful to Jeff and Melissa, whose vision for this library has now come full circle,” noted Jennifer Carr, AIM Executive Director. “Open Play is the first of many programs this year that will focus on opening up our campus to the public,”

This focus is captured in AIM’s We Are One, a 3-year organizational theme that connects the museum’s programs, events, and exhibits. The central message behind We Are One is that all voices and perspectives matter. “We want people to view AIM as not just a place to learn, but a place to gather and build community with one another,” said Carr.

Beginning Tuesday, February 6, Open Play will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday through April at AIM’s Folsom Tavern, 164 Water St., Exeter. Open Play is $5 per family.

American Independence Museum to Bring History to Life

On Saturday, Nov. 11, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the American Independence Museum (AIM) will host Rebels in the Republic, a living history event at Folsom Tavern (1775) with costumed reenactors. Set in 1786, the event will reveal through actor portrayals the different perspectives that existed at the time over currency, debt, and who should pay for the war just won. “In the first decades of the United States, there was no national currency, and individual states’ currency was hard to come by,” said AIM’s Alena Shellenbean, who is organizing the event.

The event, which takes place throughout the day, will also address the voices that were not part of the decision-making process, including women, children, Indigenous peoples, Black Americans, and various religious minorities. “This is an immersive experience that will look and feel like you are right in the middle of the 1780’s,” said Shellenbean. “People of all ages will have a wonderful time.”

Rebels in the Republic is sponsored by Service Credit Union. Tickets to the event are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (65+), and free for children under 12, members and military/veterans.

Beer for History to Feature The Czar’s Brewery and UNH Brewlab

On Thursday, November 2 and 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the American Independence Museum’s Beer for History series will feature The Czar’s Brewery and UNH Brewlab, respectively.

Presented by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, Beer for History is family-friendly and features music, trivia, Escape Room, and colonial tavern games with seating available both inside and outside the museum’s Folsom Tavern (c. 1775). “These are fun events with proceeds that support our education and public programs as part of our We Are One initiative to promote inclusive and diverse perspectives on colonial history,” said Jennifer Carr, executive director. “Have a beer for a wonderful cause.”

Tickets for each upcoming Beer for History event is $10, while youth (under 21) are free. Beer for History events take place at the American Independence Museum’s Folsom Tavern, 164 Water St., Exeter, NH. Ticket prices include beer (21+), Escape Room, and light snacks.

American Independence Museum to Host Ghosts of Winter Street Cemetery

On Saturday, October 21, the American Independence Museum will host Ghosts of Winter Street Cemetery, an annual family-friendly event that takes visitors on a tour through Winter Street Cemetery in Exeter.

Led by a colonial tour guide, the tours provide insight into some of Exeter’s most famous and infamous revolutionary residents. Primarily used from the 1740’s to 1870’s, Winter Street Cemetery is the final resting place of many prominent members of Exeter, including governors, pioneering business women, Revolutionary and Civil War veterans, politicians, and others. “It’s a wonderful and family-friendly way to spend a little bit of time learning about local history in this festive, Halloween-themed event,” said AIM’s Alena Shellenbean.

Held every 30 minutes from 4:00 p.m. through 5:30 p.m. with a family tour at 3:00 p.m., Ghosts of Winter Street Cemetery takes place on Saturday, October 21. Tours are approximately 45 minutes, and guests are encouraged to bring flashlights for the last two tours.

The cost is $10 for non-members and $7 for non-member children, ages 6-18. Members are $5 and $3 for members’ children, ages 6-18, are $3. All children under 6 are free. Family tours at 3:00 p.m. are $15 for a non-member family of four, while member families (up to four) are $10. Children are encouraged to dress for Halloween and will receive a special colonial treat. Ticket price includes a cemetery tour and a return pass to visit the museum.

von Trapp Brewing Kicks off Beer for History

Based in Stowe, VT, von Trapp Brewing will kick off Beer for History on Thursday, October 5 at Folsom Tavern (c. 1775) on the campus of the American Independence Museum (AIM) in downtown Exeter, NH.

Presented by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, Beer for History is family-friendly and features music, trivia, and/or colonial tavern games with seating available both inside and outside the tavern. “It’s a wonderful way to experience history in a fun way that brings people of all ages together,” noted Jennifer Carr, AIM executive director.

Having previously participated in Beer for History on multiple occasions, von Trapp Brewing will pour three of their beers. These beers include Bohemian Pilsner, their award-winning interpretation of a Bohemian Style Pilsner, and Dunkel, the original dark lager of Munich and the first beer “style” born out of the German Beer Purity Law. von Trapp Brewing will also pour Stowe Style Festbier, their collaboration with Narragansett Brewing Company of Providence, Rhode Island, which represents the next offering in the Stowe Style series.

“We are thrilled to welcome von Trapp Brewing back to Beer for History,” added Carr. “Our shared love of history is what keeps our partnership going.”

American Independence Museum to Host Constitution Comic Workshops

On Saturday, September 16, the American Independence Museum (AIM) will host a series of free Constitution Comic Workshops designed for educators and families.

The workshops begin at 10:00 a.m. for educators where well-known NH-based cartoonist Marek Bennett will instruct participants on how to integrate the use of comic making into the classroom to explore primary sources. Educators will receive 1 CEU for attendance.

At 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., participants will instruct families and kids (ages 7+) on basic techniques of cartooning. “It will be fun and free,” said AIM Executive Director Jennifer Carr.

The workshops represent AIM’s Building Community initiative, part of the museum’s ongoing We Are One campaign. “All voices, all perspectives matter, and everyone is welcome here—this is our core organizational message,” added Carr.

Home to a world-class collection of 3,000 historic artifacts, the American Independence Museum develops programs, events, and exhibits that honor and invite inclusive and diverse perspectives.

AIM’s Constitution Comic Workshops take place on Saturday, September 16 at 10:00 a.m. for educators and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for families and children. Space is limited and pre-registration is encouraged.

American Independence Museum To Host Escape Room Adventure

On Saturday, May 20 and Friday, June 2, visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to see if they can escape historic Folsom Tavern (1775) at the American Independence Museum (AIM).

At the event, “Trouble in the Tavern: An Escape Room Adventure,” participants must work together to decipher clues and solve puzzles within 30-minutes. “They may even learn a little history,” said AIM’s Alena Shellenbean, who developed the program. “We are excited to welcome people of all ages to our campus for a fun time.”

The event, according to AIM Executive Director Jennifer Carr, is part of the museum’s Building Community initiative within its 3-year theme, We Are One. “This Escape Room Adventure is one response to our rhetorical question, ‘How do we bring the community together?’” she said.

Built in 1775, Folsom Tavern is host to special programs and events. Visitors may also take guided tours of Folsom Tavern, 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Wednesday – Saturday. On these tours, visitors will learn the unique role of taverns in colonial and revolutionary history.

“Trouble in the Tavern: An Escape Room Adventure” will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20 and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, June 2. Tickets range from $12 to $25 with 10% off for members.

Heart pumping history is coming to Folsom Tavern. This spring, AIM is introducing a new activity: “Trouble in the Tavern: An Escape Room Adventure.” Participants must work together to decipher clues, solve puzzles, and even learn a little history. Groups of up to 8 people are in for an hour of fun with some  learning thrown in. Preregistration is highly encouraged.

Trouble in the Tavern takes place during TEAM (Town, Exeter, Arts, Music) spring Arts and Music fest. Please enjoy some live music, vendors, and artists, and then spend a delightful time in Historic Folsom Tavern with friends.
