PRESERVING DEMOCRACY
Independence relies on the passionate engagement of all citizens.
PRESERVING DEMOCRACY is central to the purpose of the American Independence Museum. When delegates agreed to the draft of the United States Constitution in 1787, Benjamin Franklin famously described the new country as “a republic, if you can keep it”. Independence relies on the passionate engagement of all citizens in the continuing American experiment in self-governance. Here at AIM, our mission is to deepen the understanding of the historic and ongoing struggle to forge a more perfect union. Through our interactive visitor experiences and public programs, the Museum shares information and asks questions that invite people to think for themselves about what independence means.
Amending America is a ten-year partnership with the William W. Treat Foundation presenting special exhibits on the Bill of Rights. Throughout the series, the Museum will highlight one of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, exploring its meaning when it was drafted and comparing that to its modern interpretation. This exciting and provocative series will run from 2026 through 2035, linking the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence to that of the movement to draft the Constitution.
