PROTECTING OUR HERITAGE is critical to the preservation of the historic buildings and artifacts that are a tangible connection to our shared past.

Ladd-Gilman House (c. 1721)

Built in 1721, the Ladd-Gilman House is designated as a National Historic Landmark.  It served as the New Hampshire State Treasury during the American Revolution and later as the Governor’s Mansion, and was the birthplace of Nicholas Gilman, Jr., a signatory to the United States Constitution.

Folsom Tavern

Folsom Tavern (c. 1775)

Built in 1775 by Colonel Samuel Folsom, the Folsom Tavern is an iconic Exeter historic landmark. The founding site of the New Hampshire Chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1783, the Tavern hosted George Washington in 1789.

The Collections of the Museum include such rare and compelling artifacts as an original Dunlop Broadside of the Declaration of Independence, an early draft of the United States Constitution, and more. This initiative includes stewardship and curation of these items as well as original research that contributes to expanding our understanding of local history.
