Neighborhood Beer Co. to kick off 2018 Beer for History

Neighborhood Beer Co. to kick off 2018 Beer for History

Presented by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law, the American Independence Museum’s first 2018 Beer for History event takes place on Thursday, September 20 in partnership with Neighborhood Beer Co.

At this event, Neighborhood Beer Co. will pour Granite Acorn Autumn Lager and Mow Money Lawnmower IPA.

A higher-alcohol, super malty version of the harvest Märzen-style Oktoberfest, Granite Acorn Autumn Lager is a smooth, crisp lager that pairs well with meats, cheeses, and autumn dishes. A hop-forward pale ale, Mow Money Lawnmower IPA is hoppy, yet light.

According to Neighborhood Beer Co.’s Salina McIntire, the museum’s Beer for History is one of their favorite events.

“We love coming here and working with the American Independence Museum to put on a fun beer event,” she said. “This is our third year here.”

Emma Bray, museum executive director, said she is excited to have Neighborhood Beer Co. kick off this year’s series, which take place at historic Folsom Tavern (c.1775). Other dates in the series include October 4, October 18 and November 1 with Earth Eagle Brewings, Throwback Brewery and von Trapp Brewing.

“It is wonderful to have Neighborhood kick off our 2018 series,” she said. “We are excited to put on family-friendly beer events.”
Beer for History
Since its inception in 2016, Beer for History has been sponsored by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law, a fact that Bray added has helped to its continued growth.

“It has been wonderful to have such a dedicated supporter behind this concept and series,” she said. “It enables us to plan and create a fun event that appeals as much to beer lovers as it does to families. All are welcome.”

This year, the series takes place at  Folsom Tavern from 6 pm to 8 pm on September 20, October 4, October 18 and November 1 with each date on a Thursday. In addition to craft beer, each event will feature music, light snacks and some form of historic entertainment, which may include colonial tavern games, colonial trivia, and/or escape room. In addition, Lexie’s Burger Bus will be present at every Beer for History except for the event on 10/4.

Tickets for each event are $15 for members and $20 for non members. Series tickets are $50 and $70 for members and nonmembers, respectively, while children (under 21) are $3. Ticket prices include beer (21+), entertainment, light snacks and more.

Museum anticipates 2018 Beer for History series

When it comes to good craft beer and history, the American Independence Museum in Exeter has the market cornered with its third Beer for History series, which kicks off on September 20 with Neighborhood Beer Co.

Sponsored by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law since its inception in 2016, Beer for History will feature a different brewer at each subsequent event. Earth Eagle Brewings is the featured brewer on October 4 with Throwback Brewery and von Trapp Brewing from Stowe, VT on October 18 and November 1, respectively.

According to museum Executive Director Emma Bray, each brewer in the series is well known and regarded for its “well-crafted brews.”

“Beer for History is known for bringing in high-quality brewers,” she said. “This event is perfect for folks who simply love a good beer. It’s also fun for history lovers, as we’ve worked unique history programming into the event in creative and fun ways.”

In addition to craft beer, each event will include Colonial Tavern Games, Colonial Trivia, and/or Escape Room as well as music and light snacks. Lexie’s Burger Bus will be on hand selling local food at all events except October 4, as the museum will announce a partnership with another local food truck for that event soon.

This year, Throwback Brewery and von Trapp Brewing join Beer for History for the first time, which excites Bray.

“Throwback and von Trapp both have unique histories themselves, so it is fun to connect our history with their history through this event,” she said.

All Beer for History events take place at the museum’s historic Folsom Tavern from 6pm to 8pm. Built in 1775, Folsom Tavern has served as backdrop to several noteworthy events in its long history, including a visit by George Washington in 1789.

“Have a beer where George Washington ate–not many museums can say that,” added Bray.

Tickets for each event are $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Series tickets are $50 and $70 for members and nonmembers, respectively, while children (under 21) are $3. Ticket prices include beer (21+), entertainment, light snacks and more.

2017 Beer for History series finishes strong

On Thursday, October 12, a large crowd could be seen spilling out of Folsom Tavern in Exeter with visitors eager to experience the final event of the annual Beer for History series for 2017.

“We had an incredible turnout—and we welcomed a lot of younger people, which was great to see,” said museum Executive Director Emma Bray. “Our Tavern Scavenger Hunt was a big hit, too. Lexie’s had their food truck parked outside and Granite State Growler Tours was there—it was a fun evening.”

Sponsored by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law, Beer for History featured one local brewery at each of the three events with Neighborhood Beer Co. followed by 7th Settlement Brewery and most recently Earth Eagle Brewings.

“From our wonderful sponsor to the brewers who donated the beer and volunteered their time, our second annual Beer for History series was a great success,” added Bray. “We are very thankful that this community event continues to grow and we look forward to an even more successful series in 2018.”

Kevin Baum of Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law said he is also enthused at the continued growth of the series, which he believes helps to highlight Exeter’s “rich cultural heritage.”

“This is a rich, vibrant community that has a lot to offer people of all ages,” he said. “Located in the center of this historic downtown, the museum serves as the gateway to all this town has to offer.”

Held at the museum’s Folsom Tavern in Exeter, Beer for History featured craft brews, hors d’oeuvres, games, and more. Founded in 1991, the nonprofit American Independence Museum features living history exhibits and a large collection that includes one of 26 surviving copies of the Declaration of Independence and two rare drafts of the U.S. Constitution.

Last Beer for History call this week

On Thursday, October 12, the American Independence Museum will host its last Beer for History event in 2017 at Folsom Tavern on Water Street in Exeter.

Sponsored by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law, the event represents an ambitious collaboration between the museum and many brewers since the series began in 2016.

“Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts made this possible with financial support and their belief in our mission, while brewers have donated beer, time and resources—it’s a wonderful collaboration,” said museum Executive Director Emma Bray.

Some of the brewers that have been involved in Beer for History include Neighborhood Beer Co., 7th Settlement Brewery, Moat Mountain Brewing Co., and D.L. Geary Brewing Co. At this last Beer for History, Earth Eagle Brewings from Portsmouth will be featured.

“Brewers have a passion for history and honoring their roots,” noted Bray. “Beer and history are interconnected.”

In addition to craft beer, attendees can enjoy colonial games, music and light snacks in a restored tavern that was built in 1775.

“Folsom Tavern was at the very heart of Exeter’s political and community scene in the 1770’s,” said Bray. “This is a chance to experience the place in a way that directly connects people with America’s colonial past.

Held at the museum’s Folsom Tavern at 164 Water Street in Exeter, Beer for History will take place on Thursday, October 12 from 6 pm to 8 pm with tickets priced at $20 for nonmembers and $15 for members. Admission includes beer, hors d’oeuvres, games, and more. Families are welcome.

Earth Eagle Brewings to pour at next Beer for History

On Thursday, October 12 at the American Independence Museum’s Folsom Tavern, the last Beer for History in 2017 will take place with Portsmouth-based Earth Eagle Brewings as the featured brewer. Combining craft brews and colonial games the second annual seasonal event series seeks to inspire a new generation of lovers of history.

“We want to engage people in what we do here and show that history can be fun” said museum Executive Director Emma Bray. “I think we have done that with Beer for History, which has attracted people of all ages, including some younger folks—Folsom Tavern is a beautiful and historic backdrop for any event.”

Since the first Beer for History took place in May of 2016, the series has been sponsored by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law.

“They appreciate the history of the tavern and our museum,” she said. “They want to see downtown Exeter thrive—and with more art, music and culinary options all within a 5-minute walk of our property, we believe we are part of an emerging cultural scene here.”

Sue Desjardins, president of the Board of Governors at the museum, referred to their Folsom Tavern as one of the town’s “original gathering places.” She cited George Washington’s stop at the Tavern in the late 1700’s as one example of Exeter’s rich history.

“The fact that we have one of the original gathering places right here in Exeter, which today serves beer brewed by our very generous local craft beer makers—well, that’s pretty special,” she said.

Expressing appreciation for the continued support of Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law, Bray said she hopes this last Beer for History encourages newcomers.

“This is a warm and welcoming place—we want to share our shared history with everyone while at the same time foster meaningful partnerships with local businesses,” she said. “This is your last chance to check out Beer for History this year.”

Neighborhood Beer Co. to brew beer inspired from 14th century Europe

As part of the American Independence Museum’s inaugural Beer for History event on Thursday, May 19 in downtown Exeter, Neighborhood Beer Co. (NHBC) is brewing a Baroque Butterfly Tan Ale, its take on a late medieval brew from the lowlands of Northwestern Europe. According to NHBC’s Joe Berwanger, the slightly sour, mixed-grain ale was very popular even in the mid-17th century, as it was praised by Pope Alexander VII when he helped negotiate the peace treaty of the Thirty Years’ War.

“A great example of beer’s prominent role in history, our recreation of this transcendent ale features a unique easy-drinking quality with citrus notes balancing out the slightly sour finish,” he said.

For the Museum’s Rob Levey, who initially outreached NHBC to gauge their interest in participating in Beer for History, the beer represents a “tangible and fun” reminder that history matters.

“Learning and celebrating history helps ground us as a nation, so Joe and his team’s enthusiasm at connecting their beer with the general concept of history itself is really pretty cool,” he said.

The man responsible behind the Keutebier style beer and the many award-winning German-style beers at NHBC is GABF award-winning brewer, international beer judge and brewing consultant, German-born Horst Dornbusch.

“Having opened up a little more than 6 months ago, we want to do all we can to connect with Exeter and the surrounding communities,” he said. “Partnering with the American Independence Museum and the other great brewers they have lined up for the series made a lot of sense too all of us…We look forward to unveiling our beer at May’s Beer for History.”

Sponsored by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law of Portsmouth, other brewers include 7th Settlement in Dover and D.L. Geary Brewing Company from Maine. The Beer for History series kicks off on May 19 in Exeter, NH and will continue on June 23 with a Tavern Night theme and on October 20 with a Fall Harvest theme.

In addition to craft brews, each event will feature live music, food, games and magic for children. The Beer for History event in May will feature food prepared by 3 Brothers Marketplace in Exeter.

Tickets for each event in the series will be $30 and include food, samplings of beer, games for kids, and more. Members of the Museum may purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $25. To buy tickets for an individual event or for the entire series at a discounted rate, visit Beer for History.
